Top Cat (often abbreviated to as T.C.) is an anthropomorphic cat and a recurring character of the Yogi Bear franchise. His voice was originated by Arnold Stang, using a similar Phil Silvers impression to Daws Butler.
Background[]
Personality[]
Top Cat (or T.C.) is the leader of a gang of alley cats. He is a smooth-talking, confidence cat (con cat) who makes his living by being somewhat lazy, clever and very funny. He often steals others' ideas and tricks his gang and Officer Dibble, using schemes to make his feline life more comfortable. He does respect the gang but takes advantage of others' naivete. Even though he seems selfish, lazy and conniving, T.C. is loyal to the gang and will come to their assistance if necessary.
Physical Appearance[]
Top Cat is a tall and slender anthropomorphic cat with cream yellow fur, a white muzzle with freckles, a black nose, black eyebrows, four black whiskers, and a rather long tail. He usually wears a Tyrian purple vest and a matching pork pie hat with special holes to poke his ears through. He occasionally carries a black cane.
Appearances[]
- Yogi's Ark Lark
- Yogi's Treasure Hunt
- "Double Trouble" (The New Yogi Bear Show, guest cameo appearance on a newspaper)
- Fender Bender 500
- Jellystone!
Notes/Trivia[]
- Top Cat bares some similarities to Hokey Wolf, who came the same year in 1961, because both create schemes to get what they want and both have similar voices, despite them being voiced by two different people.
- Although interestingly enough, Daws Butler represented the voice of Top Cat in the animated television special, Yogi's Ark Lark, pilot of Yogi's Gang, as Arnold Stang wasn't available at the time. Since Daws was using a similar-sounding voice to Hokey, Hokey had no dialogue in the film, and this issue could have also been the main reason Top Cat didn't appear for the series.
